Effectively changing behavior using Behavioral Models

Updated: May 12

Changing behavior is not easy. Human behavior is the result of countless psychological processes, and there is no simple on/off switch for desired behavior. To effectively change behavior, it is important to understand how choices are made and what factors influence that process. This is where we use our Behavioral Models for. In this article, we will discuss what Behavioral Models are and why they are so valuable in changing behavior in practice.

What are Behavioral Models?

Behavioral Models are a clear and applicable representation of knowledge from psychology and behavioral science. They show how people make choices and what psychological and environmental factors influence those choices. As a result, they offer in-depth insights into choice processes in a relatively simple way and form the basis for understanding and changing behavior.

How do Behavioral Models work?

Behavioral Models map out the possible routes to desired behavior. On those routes, you will find the most important conditions for behavior change. If you meet these conditions, it will lead to the desired behavior. In other words, a Behavioural Model shows you everything you have to consider when you want to influence people's choices. This provides concrete tools for effectively changing behavior in practice.

Therefore, it is useful to take these Behavioral Models as a guideline for changing behavior. They provide direction and structure to long-term plans and help to quickly set up or refine effective actions, interventions, or communication.

How do we apply Behavioral Models in practice?

We use these Behavioral Models as a guideline for applying behavior change in practice. We do this by determining for our clients how they score on the conditions for behavior change. That score is built up from various psychological factors and is determined by the environmental factors of a specific case or situation.

Based on the scores, we can determine for our clients which conditions they do or do not meet, where the biggest opportunities and improvement points lie, and which routes will be most effective in changing behavior. This way, we develop tailor-made strategies, interventions, and communication that are effective in changing behavior in the specific situation of the client.

In summary, Behavioral Models are a valuable tool for understanding and changing behavior. They provide insight into complex psychological processes, form the guideline for a structured behavioral approach, and offer concrete tools for effectively changing behavior in specific situations.
